Chrome Tourmaline Beads
Chrome tourmaline beads are from a rather special member of the tourmaline group. Found only in east Africa, Chrome Tourmaline bead material is usually found mainly in small sizes. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in color -- it displays perhaps the richest, most intense green in the gemstone world. Tourmaline is recognized for having the widest color spectrum of any gem and for lightly or deeply saturated hues of Colorless, pink (Rubelite), red, yellow, brown, green (Chrome), greenish blue, blue (Indicolite), violet, black, bicolored and multicolored. Known since antiquity in the Mediterranean region - Tourmaline was named in 1703 by Dutch traders who gave the gemstone a Sinhalese name, `Turamali` , thought to mean `stone with mixed colors`. Tourmaline is a crystal silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, potassium which produce a beautiful and vast color palate. Tourmaline is mined in Brazil, Afghaniatan, Australia, Burma, India, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, US, Zaire, Italy, and Switzerland. Color enhancement through heat is common. Cat`s Eye Tourmaline is a variety of Tourmaline that has the phenomenon of Chatoyancy. The phenomenon is caused by thin tube-like inclusions aligning along a plane within the crystal structure of the stone and causing light to reflect in a linear pattern. The effect is quite beautiful and rare in gemology as only a few gem species can have this Cat`s Eye effect. The phenomenon can be seen in the green and pink tourmaline colors.
